HOW TO ELOPE IN GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO IN 2026

THINKING OF ELOPING IN GRAND JUNCTION, colorado or the colorado national monument?

AN ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER’S GUIDE TO ELOPING IN THE DESERT ON COLORADO’S WILD WESTERN SLOPE

If you’re thinking of eloping in Colorado and found yourself going down the research rabbit hole you might have found yourself learning something you never imagined – that Colorado has deserts and that those deserts are the PERFECT place for a spring or fall elopement in Colorado.

All the beauty of the deserts of Utah but with Colorado’s easy elopement laws (and the ability for your dog to sign your marriage license with their paw print) makes the Grand Junction and Colorado National Monument area a perfect spot for your Colorado desert elopement!

where is grand junction, Colorado?

Grand Junction is on the far western border of Colorado, almost at the Utah state line. It’s a direct shot along I70, about a 4 hour drive from Denver.

And it’s beautiful.

While Colorado is largely known for it’s giant mountains and skiing, this little corner of the state is widely known as a desert playground, world class mountain biking, river activities like kayaking and rafting, and being off the beaten path.

I love it there and if you’re looking for a non-traditional place to elope in Colorado, I think you’ll love the Grand Junction, Fruita, and Colorado National Monument area too!

Is grand junction, colorado, a good place to elope?

Yes, especially if you want to elope in Colorado but aren’t set on mountain vibes.

The Grand Junction and Colorado National Monument area is one of Colorado’s best kept secrets. This high desert landscape is dramatic, beautiful, and off the beaten path.

Grand Junction is a big enough city that there are plenty of lodging and restaurant options. And if you’re looking for something a little more quaint, this area also has tons of cute, smaller towns – like Fruita or Palisade (with it’s wineries and peaches) as well as nearby high desert resorts in Gateway Canyon.

when is the best time of year to elope in Grand junction and the colorado National monument

This area’s weather and climate are vastly different than much of Colorado, making it a great place to elope if you are wanting to do it during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall). It’s also beautiful and far more wild than the Colorado Mountains in the winter months

ELOPING IN Grand Junction in Fall

Fall is a glorious time in the Colorado deserts and a perfect time to elope there. While September tends to be hot, the weather cools down in October and is absolutely lovely through November-ish. Think sunny days, cool evenings, and perfect fall desert vibes.

ELOPING IN Grand Junction in the winter

Don’t be fooled by the fact that this is the desert, it DOES get chilly in the winter! Having said that, snow is fairly uncommon (and extraordinarily beautiful when it coats those red rocks!) and the weather is much more mild than it is in other parts of Colorado. Winter is a great time for an elopement in Grand Junction, as long as you’re cool with some chillier weather!

ELOPING IN Grand junction IN Spring

Spring is probably the most popular time to visit the Grand Valley and Colorado National Monument, especially as the rest of Colorado starts dreaming of warmer weather after a long winter! While the rest of the state is often getting dumped on in March, this area is starting to really warm up (although it can still be chilly!)! By April and May the weather has typically swung to full on spring temps and it’s perfect!

ELOPING IN Grand junction in Summer

No. Just don’t do it. Way too hot.

How to get a marriage license in grand junction

Getting your marriage license in Mesa County Colorado is super easy!

Colorado has some of the most laid-back wedding laws in the country and Mesa County is no acception. All you need to do to get legally married in Grand Junction is pick up your marriage license which can be done at the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder’s office.

Colorado does NOT require an officiant or witnesses and your dog can even sign your marriage license with it’s pawprint!

TRhings to do in the grand valley when you visit for your elopement

Whether you are looking for things to do during your elopement or wondering about activity ideas for the rest of your trip, you’ll find plenty of options in this area! The possibilities for adventure (and relaxation) are endless.

Here are a couple ideas to get you started:

Hike in the colorado national monument

The Colorado National Monument is an absolute gem and has hikes available for all levels of adventure lovers. Want a chill desert walk? You’ve got it. Want to go a lot father? There are plenty of options here for you. One of the best things about the Monument is that, while it’s technically part of the National Park system, because it doesn’t have a “national park” designation it tends to be a LOT quieter than other spots. It’s awesome!

Visit wineries in palisade

While Colorado is not known for being a wine drinking destination, there are in fact wineries here! Palisade is just up the road on I-70 and has tons of wineries you can visit. You can choose to take a tour or visit on your own and just enjoy sitting in the sun sipping some local wine.

Mountain biking!

This area has some of the best mountain biking in the whole U.S. with trails available for every level. Beginners should check out Kessel Run in the 18 Road area or Wrangler’s Loop in the Kokopelli area. Intermediate riders will LOVE Horsetheif Bench (one of my favorite trails in the world!) and the Western Rim loop and there are tons of options for more advanced riders as well. Bring your own bike or rent one from Over the Edge in Fruita. Don’t forget to celebrate your ride like a local with a pizza and beer at the Hot Tomato!

Day trip to moab

Moab is just an hour and a half up the road and is absolutely worth a day (or several day) visit! Moab has two National Parks, a stunning state park, ENDLESS miles of BLM land, and tons of things to do. Moab is also an EXCELLENT place for a desert elopement if you’re not tied to Colorado!

where to stay for your Grand junction and Colorado national monument elopement

Twin Lakes, Leadville, and Buena Vista are all very different places with very different characters. If you stay in one you can visit any of them so really, there are no bad choices here! In the interest of getting you started and helping you pick the right choice for YOU, let’s talk about each of these towns!

Staying in grand junction

Grand Junction is the biggest city on Colorado’s Western Slope and a great jumping off point for your Colorado National Monument elopement. You’ll have endless options for lodging, restaurants, shops, etc.

staying in Fruita

I LOVE Fruita. It’s a quiet, charming town that doesn’t have a lot going on but just has impeccable vibes. Something about pulling onto that Main Street just makes me so happy. There are limited dining options here (but some of the ones that are there are REALLY good – like the Hot Tomato, Basecamp Provisions, and Bestslope coffee).

Staying in palisade

Palisade is just up the road and is famous for it’s wineries …. and even MORE famous for it’s peaches. Us Coloradans are VERY proud of our Palisade peaches and everyone looks forward to peach season! If spending your trip chilling at wineries sounds like your idea of a good time, you might love staying in Palisade!

Gateway canyon

This part of Colorado isn’t really known for bougie resorts but if that’s what you have in mind, definitely consider staying at Gateway Canyon. This resort is located right along the border of Colorado and Utah and is perfect for couples who want luxury and pampering at their Grand Valley elopement.

We will be talking about our wonderful experience with Jen forever! She made our adventure elopement wedding dreams come to life!
