When Kortney and Ben first reached out to me about photographing their Telluride backpacking elopement next summer they started the email off with “We’re just a couple weirdos who fell in love …”. I liked them instantly. And after we met up for drinks to scheme up some crazy ideas for their elopement I loved them even more! Their elopement is still a few weeks away but I was super pumped when they said they wanted to head to do a Rocky Mountain National Park adventure session for their engagement photos!
Kortney and Ben have only lived in Colorado for a few years but its instantly clear when you hang out with them how much they love the outdoors. In the short amount of time that they’ve been here they’ve done loads of hiking and backpacking and have explored some quiet parts of the state that I haven’t even visited yet (thanks for the inspiration, guys!).
For their adventure session we decided to do a sunrise hike to Dream Lake which was apparently the site of some sort of tragic ramen incident on a previous trip. I don’t know, guys. I just go along with it. 😉
They camped in the park the night before and listened to the elk bugling allllllllll night long and we met at oh-dark-thirty to hike up to the lake. It was a beautiful and surprisingly warm morning and we had a blast exploring the area.
One of my favorite parts of this gig is all the different relationships I get to see. Some couples are sweet and sentimental. Some are super serious. These guys? These guys are really freaking FUN! They had me laughing all morning – especially when I told Kortney to “back that ass up” and a dance party broke out. Anyone who can dance at 6 a.m.after a largely sleepless night is a-ok in my book.
After photographing their adventure session I’m even more stoked for their elopement next year. Along with a few of their friends we’ll be heading to the San Juan mountains, backpacking to a killer location, and camping under the stars so that they can say their vows at sunrise the next morning. After that we’re going to head back down to Telluride, hit the via ferrata, and spend the rest of the day partying around Telluride.
Its going to be a blast and I meet need a week to recover! 😉
Here are a few photos from their Rocky Mountain National Park Adventure Session. Enjoy!
